What Comics Do You Like?

So I'm just curious what comics if any you read/collect/look at the pretty pictures. I've seen lots of discussion on Buffy and Supernatural Origins comics of course since most people I know online are associated with one or both of those fandoms.

I'll go first...I put descriptions or expanded on why I like it under a cut.

Current comics I'm reading include:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
--I don't think I need to explain what this comic is about.

Runaways
--This was just a great book from the start. It's a book about a group of kids that find out their parents are super villans. It kind of had the same group dynamic that Buffy had. It's really hard to find a favorite character...they're all so cool. Although Molly and Karolina are probably my most favorite. (yeah...I said 'most favorite') The Joss Whedon run started a little slow but is shaping up pretty good.

The Ride: Die Valkyrie
--I actually read this because the blurb made me think of [info]spnaimee. Don't ask me why. Apparently 'The Ride' has been out before and all the various mini-series follow the travels of a black 68 Camaro. This series follows a group of girls and their adventures with the Camaro. It's shaping up to be a nice violence filled action story. Guns & fast cars for the win!

Civil War
--Unlike the rest of the comic world I didn't read this as it came out. I just bought the trade paperback versions. I got all 15 or so and while I really enjoyed the story I'd suggest only getting the main Civil War trade and maybe Captain America and Iron Man. The story is this: During your standard hero vs villain battle a bunch of innocent kids get killed. Government passes a law that requires all heroes to register. Iron Man spearheads the pro registration group and Captain America is at the forefront of the anti registration camp. Cap then leads a guerrilla type movement against the govt in opposition of the registration act. And Iron Man does some really shady stuff including deputizing super villains to go after the heroes. As the story progresses Iron Man is a really manipulative sneaky son of a bitch. You heard it here first! I'm going to go ahead and predict that Tony Stark will be the next president of the US in the Marvel Universe.

Thor
--I haven't read this yet since it just started back up but I only want to read it because J. Michael Strazynski is writing it. Ever since Babylon 5 I have been hooked on anything he writes.

Y the Last Man
--The series is coming to a close but I'm still behind. I am just starting Vol 4. The premise is that something killed every male mammal on the planet. Except Yorick and his pet monkey. Agent 355 and Dr Mann are trying to get him across country to Dr Mann's medical complex in the chaotic world left after all the males of the world are gone. Trust me this is a great book even if my description is kind of lame. :) And it's soon to be a movie! Yay!

Feel free to let me know what your favorites are. Or join me in a squee about the ones I like. :) Feel free to link other people to this since I want lots of talk about comics. Please? You don't even need reasons for why you like a book. Just participate!

Yay Buffy!

I wanted to read Runaways...but I'm afraid I'm waaaaaay too far behind and I don't like starting something in the middle.

I also read those Angel comics, like right now I'm reading Spike: Shadow Puppets. Those are actually kind of underrated, in my opinion.

Runaways did this single comic that summed up the entire series in one comic. It came out before Joss took over at 25. It was like a diary type thing in the point of view of Molly. Pretty much all text with a few pictures so they could fit all the info in.

I wasn't too impressed with the random Angel comics I read but I've heard good things about the Spike comics. Maybe I'll give it a shot. I do plan to read the Angel Season 6 comic they're gonna do.

The Angel comics had hits and misses. The Angel standalones are great.

To my knowledge, there are two Spike series. The first one was called Spike: Asylum, which I just LOVED. The new one is the Shadow Puppets one, which tackles the question 'What if Spike was turned into a wee little puppet man?' I'd recommend both, even though Shadow Puppets is only 2 comics in. :p

Aw man, Civil War and the aftermath have made me hate Tony Stark something awful. It's pretty sad when I can think about about a character: "I liked him a lot more when he was a drunken womanizer." I'm almost hoping he'll turn out to be a Skrull in the next big event, but I'd also like to see a him have a huge downfall.

I'm with you on Runaways and Y the Last Man, though I've fallen behind of the last one and need to do a lot of rereading before I pick it up again.

I'm also really digging Peter David's X-Factor. He's one of my favorite comic book writers and I love what he's doing with the characters here. I know a lot of people hated Layla Miller in House of M, but I loved her. She has some fantastic chemistry with the rest of the X-Factor cast. And David is doing some amazing stuff in exploring the Madrox's powers and the nature of his duplicates.

I've recently picked up X-Men again, with all the hype over issue 200. I *hate* the current artist, but I'm liking the book as a whole. Rogue is one of my favorite Marvel characters and seeing her as a team leader is really cool. She also currently is losing her identity after absorbing a few million people all at once.

For the most part I'm also loving Whedon's run on Astonishing X-Men. I just wish the issues woudl be released on a timely basis. I'm really looking forward to seeing what happens next year when Warren Ellis takes over.

I'm also reading Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate Spiderman and I'm looking forward to Ultimates V3.

I can't believe I forgot Astonishing X-Men! I'm all about the Kitty Pryde love. :)

I am thinking of starting to read Ultimate Spider-man. Ever since the random issue I read where Spider-man was dating Kitty. Being a comic store owner it's sad but I didn't realize they had changed Spider-man storylines that much. I just figured it was all just the same old same old.

They've actually done a pretty decent job in making Ulitmate Spidey different. Although in the current arc he just got back together with MJ, the word is that the Kitty storyline isn't done yet (she's actually going to the same high school as him now).

One of the things I really liked about Ulitmate Spiderman is that the first 111 issues are all done by the same artist, which gives it a great sense of consistancy.

And in the 616 universe everything is so serious these days. Ultimate has done a good job of keeping Spidey snappy and joke-cracking, even when situations are pretty dire.

Plus, Nick Fury rocks my socks and is in the book quite frequently. The art for him was modeled after Samuel L. Jackson and it's all kinds of cool.

I knew that him looking like Samuel L Jackson couldn't be a coincidence. lol

I think it's great. It actually throws me a little whenever I see him in the 616 universe and I have to remind myself "Oh, yeah, he's white in this continuity"

I thought about reading Runaways, and I've been interested in trying to pick up the older comics for something like Batman. But until Buffy came along, my only experience with comics was limited to The Archies and some book about a bunch of comic book characters on vacation, which I still haven't been able to figure out what it was. One of the female characters in it reminded me of Trinity from The Matrix, though. I know they mentioned her name in the book, but I can't remember it. It's been bugging me for years.

I always liked Batman. I haven't kept up with the issues like I should but Batman and his people will always have a special place in my heart. *tears* ;)

And Runaways is pretty good.

And I wonder what that comic you're talking about is.

Random Batman thoughts...

If you're looking for some great Batman stories these are what I'd suggest:
Batman: No Mans Land
Batman: Dark Knight Returns
Batman: In Darkest Knight (if you can find it. It's a what if type story where Bruce Wayne gets a Green Lantern Ring)

Actually a lot of the Batman stories after No Mans Land were pretty good.

I've got a very love/hate relationship with comics. Currently I'm reading buffy. I'd have to special order Supernatural to get it, because the local shop dosen't just stock it.

I kind of got soured on reading comics with the All New! All Different! All Over Again! X-men. I got tired of them revamping the book once a year, throwing out everything they ever did, just to take the book in a new direction. So burnt out that I didn't even give it a fair shake when they brought Joss on board. And that's saying a lot.

I remember reading thor when I was younger, and liking it. But they lost me on a revamp.

So yeah. Love/hate comics.

The past couple of years have seen a huge improvement in the quality of the art and storytelling in comics. In my opinion at least. I think the companies finally realized if they wanted people to keep buying they needed to make it worth buying.

That's good. Because for the price of two or three good comics, I can buy a paperback novel.

If I had sixty-five grand I would buy Batman #1 and not because of the awesomeness of the Caped Crusader. Though his is pretty damn awesome but because it has the first appearance of Catwoman (simply called The Cat), I’m her fangirl to the umpteenth degree. Except Frank Miller’s version, I’m sorry but I just can’t picture Selina as a high priced prostitute/dominatrix.

*considering pause* On second thought. ;-)

I’m a DC girl but more Batman than Superman (too much of a boy scout) but I do get geeked whenever Smallville makes the smallest reference to another character outside the writer’s little’verse. J’onn J’onz people, squee with me! Of course the only reason I started watching again was the Green Arrow storyline. So I’m a little shallow but damn is that actor pretty and I also have a big love for the JLA and I kinda want to see how they pull it all together on the show.

I’m starting to get into Wolverine Origins and the Punisher has a small corner of my heart. So not all of Marvel is dead to me. Civil War was pretty damn fantastic but I’m bouncing with fanish glee at the thought of what the Hulk is gonna do to all of them. I cannot wait for that storyline to start in full force and Marvel Zombies was pretty freakin’ fun.

Of course I’m reading Buffy and Supernatural. I’m still a little iffy about Supernatural but I’m gonna give it a couple more issues and hope for the best. I’m a Witchblade and Darkness fan but since Sarah no longer wields the Witchblade and is knocked up possibly by Jackie (wtf?) I’m thinking I might drop them from my pull.

I’ll basically read anything once and if I think it blows I won’t pick up another issue but if it catches my raccoon like attention (I like shiny things) then I’ll add it to my list for a few months.

The fist comic I ever owned (and still do) was Catwoman #0 (after Crisis) that my brother picked up for me because he thought that might stop me from rummaging through his…oh what a bad idea. The very first comic I ever read was the Batman Bane storyline, I’m not sure the actual numbers but it was when Bane released all the Arkham inmates to wear down Batman before snapping his back. (chicken shit, bastard) Give me the Joker any day.

I was a huge Catwoman fan until the most recent incarnation. I just don't like the whole goggles/short hair look. I too started with that Catwoman #0 and got it until last year. I almost wish Catwoman did more with Birds of Prey.

I kind of miss finding time to read all the comics I get.

I really agree with you. Come on Buffy is the coolest. I can't put those comic books down. Joss Whendon is just brilliant.

I also love the Civil War series. I just amazing how all the Superheroes will react to one all of it if they were the ones being judge. It makes me hate some of the caracters. Iron Man is an ass, I agree with you a 100% in that. How can he be so freaking... I can't even discribe my anger.

I am also reading The Supernatural:Origin comic book. It's interesting an I love seeing how it all came to be with the boys and papa winchester. lol.

I also been wanting to read Runaways. I don't know it has couth my attention. But I feel that I am way behind. Do you have any comics you recomend to geek of the supernatural world? lol..

Fray.
Awesome comic book by Joss . I loved it But unfortunatly I am still missing the 6 issue. I need to get that issue. I love how the story line is I wish there was more lol.

Oh and I have been wanting to read the three issue of Serenity that Joss wrote. I am freaking crazy about that movie. I love it and the series Firefly also. I think that is one of the only movies I could watch over and over. I love it. I so want to get the new speciel Edition one but I already have the movie. lol.

OH and I added a post in my journal hoping that more people will join your meme.

We will continue strong ... lol "raises hand in the air" lol...

As far as something supernatural there are a few that look promising coming out. I'll let you know if they're any good when they come out.

Bonds -Not out yet but looks good.
Girls -series is done but it was a great ride. Think your typical zombie movie but with replicating identical women instead of zombies.
Walking Dead -zombies for the win!
The Sword -sounds like Kill Bill with magic. :)
Consumed -boy meets girl. girl turns out to have been marked for demonic possession by ex-boyfriend. boy must save girl from.

RUNAWAYS! Good art, bril writing.

Y THE LAST MAN! I'm even more behind than you, I think. The art is good, but the story is downright compelling. I fear that Hollywood will get a hold of this and screw with it, you know? The story's features can be so easily ruined by the roughshod trampling executives can be known for.

PREACHER! It's twisted and violent, and I love it for that. At some points the art doesn't meet what I would like, but oh freaking well, right? The crazy story more than makes up for it.

DAMPYR! Black and white, no color needed for this noir comic, SRSLY. And, is it me, or does the main character totally look like Ralph Finnes?

MUSASHI #9 I began picking this up right before I stopped working at the store, so I only got the first few books. I don't know if it got weird or anything. So many Manga go and get weird, and then it looses my interest.

TRIGUN! I love the story. The characters are so well rounded. The world is so well developed. It's love.

Preacher is a pretty awesome book. I hear that HBO has a series in the works.

I haven't read much manga since Dark Horse used to print it in normal comic style years ago. I really like Gunsmith Cats. I've seen the Trigun show but never read the manga. The show was pretty good so I can assume the manga is at least as good. :)

Hello. I followed a link from anteka's journal here and am always up for comic conversation.

The titles on my monthly pull are Buffy, SPN, Hellblazer, Fables, Astonishing Xmen, and Fell. I am reading Runaways in collected form, and Nextwave too. I also read a few others that aren't coming to my brain off the top of my head.

The two on my list I would recommend to anyone are Fables (we're towards #60 but they've collected all of it) and Nextwave.
Fables is set in a world where all of the fairytale characters you already know were chased from their homeworld by evil, and they now live in our world, hiding their strangeness and trying to make their own world functional. It manages to be sweet, romantic, political, and have kick ass fights.
Nextwave is superheroes on Warren Ellis crack. It's incredibly funny and definitely worth picking up the first trade.

I've always been more a DC girl than Marvel (sacrilege!) but when I was kid and had allowance money for one comic a month there were four x-titles and I couldn't choose. So I read the Teen Titans. heh. These days I tend to follow authors: Gaiman, Ellis, Ennis, Moore. Lots of white British guys for some reason.

And you are the fifth or so person to recommend Y the last man, eventually I will have to start picking that up.

I've heard good things about Fables. I keep meaning to get the trades and start reading. Maybe after I finish with Y the Last Man.

And as far as super hero comics go I usually prefer DC although Civil War really got me interested in Cap and Iron Man and a few others. DC generally seemed to have better stories so I was partial to that. And who can't love Elseworlds? It's like DC Comics fanfiction. I really liked Superman Red Son. Instead of fighting for "... truth, justice, and the American Way," Superman is described in Soviet propaganda broadcasts "... as the Champion of the common worker who fights a never-ending battle for Stalin, socialism, and the international expansion of the Warsaw Pact."
Rebecca
[info]beeker121 at 2007-08-05 02:06 (UTC) (Link)
I generally stopped reading most super hero comics sometime around college. It seems like every hero has two or three titles and I rarely wanted to start that many new things; or they've been around forever, and my sense of completeness rankles at starting with 230-something. It's only recently that I started reading 'spandex' titles again, with Runaways and the Young Avengers. And oddly they're both Marvel. Hrmm. I've never read Elseworlds, though the Superman you described sounds really cool.

Fables is really good, most people I know who've jumped in really like it. It's totally worth adding to your list. I'm waiting for Y the Last Man to finish before I start getting the trades. I know they're close and that way I can sprint to the end if I choose.
